Healthy diet after weight loss surgery

Stage 1: Day 1-3

An X-Ray procedure (gastrography) may be performed in the morning after surgery to evaluate the new stomach and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, one can take one ounce of water (30 ml) at room temperature each hour while awake.

Diet:

Day 1: Only sips of water.

Day 2-3: Clear Liquids (Total fluid 1-1.5 L per day).

  • No sugar, no fat
  • Sip 50 ml liquids (transparent form) in one hour using a spoon
  • Don't use straw
  • Stop when there is a feeling of fullness
  • Drink water in between the other liquids
  • All liquids should be strained before consumption
  • No carbonated and alcoholic beverages

Diet Plan:

  • Green/Black Tea
  • Coconut water
  • Clear vegetable soup / chicken / dal water
  • Fresh lime water + salt + zeera powder
  • Fresh apple juice / whey water / barley water with few drops of mint
  • Fresh lime water

Stage 2: Day 4-20

  • Thicker consistency liquids to be consumed (No sugar, no fat)
  • Sip liquids slowly to prevent dumping syndrome
  • Intake of one litre of fluid is beneficial every day to pass clear urine

Diet: Full Liquid Diet (Total fluid 2-2.5 L)

  • Try to consume 200 - 250 ml fluids per waking hour
  • Do not add maida or corn flour to the soup

Diet Plan:

  • Tea with skimmed milk
  • Skimmed milk with sugar-free stevia (vanilla essence or elaichi powder can be used for flavor)
  • Vegetable soup (tomato, carrot, spinach, mix veg) / chicken soup
  • Lassi / buttermilk (salted + zeera powder)
  • Fresh juice without sugar (apple / orange / watermelon / carrot / tomato)
  • Tea with skimmed milk / coconut water
  • Soup (chicken / dal / vegetable)
  • Thin custard (made from skimmed milk)
  • Skimmed milk

Stage 3: Day 21-30

  • Demand for an increased protein requirement
  • Food consistency should be in mashed form
  • Eat 5 small meals in diet per day (early breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, evening eat, and dinner)
  • Do not skip or add meals
  • Avoid spicy food

Diet: Pureed Form / Baby Food Consistency

  • Food with no fats, no sugar, and high in protein
  • Use a blender or a food processor
  • Try to slowly sip 120 - 150 ml of fluids every hour between meals
  • Consume fluids 30 minutes before and after meals

Diet Plan: 700 Calories

1. Early Breakfast
  • Green Tea / Tea with 50 ml skimmed milk
  • Marie Biscuits (1 Pc)
  • 2 almonds and one walnut (powdered form)
2. Mid-Morning
  • Porridge (Suji / Dalia / Oats) 10g
  • Skimmed milk 100 ml
  • Poached egg white 1 / skimmed milk paneer 15g
3. Lunch
  • Stewed and pureed fruit (Apple / Pear / Papaya / Watermelon / Orange) 100g
4. Evening
  • Khichadi: Rice - 20gm, Dal - 10gm, Veg - 20g, Paneer/Chicken/Fish 20gm (with ginger, garlic, salt, haldi, hing, and zeera powder)
  • Skimmed milk, plain curd/raita (ghia / pumpkin / pudina) 50g
5. Dinner
  • Thin custard with fruit / milkshake: Skimmed milk 100 ml, Fruit (Apple / Papaya / Strawberry) 40 gm, Custard powder 1 tsp
  • Soup (Chicken / Dal / Veg) 25 gm
  • Khichadi: Dalia - 20gm, Moong Chhilka - 10gm, Veg - 20g, Nutrela 10gm / Chicken or Fish 20 gm (with ginger, garlic, salt, haldi, hing, and zeera powder)
  • Skimmed milk, plain curd/raita (ghia / pumpkin / pudina) 50g
6. Late Evening
  • Thin custard / Phirni: Skimmed milk 200 ml, Custard 1 tsp / 10 gm rice

Stage 4: 2nd to 3rd Month

  • Introduce new soft foods slowly
  • Avoid fiber to allow continued healing and lessen the chance of obstruction
  • If nausea, pain, or vomiting occurs - STOP TAKING MEALS. Take clear liquids for your next meal

Diet: Soft Diet

Diet Plan: 800 Calories

Meal Items
1. Early Morning
  • Lemon water / coconut water 100 ml
2. Breakfast
  • Egg white (scrambled / poached) 2 or skimmed milk cottage cheese 50 gm
  • Whole wheat toast - 1 slice or oats / dalia / muesli 20 gm
  • Skimmed milk 200 ml
3. Mid-Morning
  • Home-made unsweetened juice 100 ml / soft fruit 100 gm
4. Lunch
  • Vegetables or chicken soup 100ml
5. Evening
  • Dal 15gm or chicken / fish 20gm (boneless, grilled, boiled, pureed)
  • Over-boiled brown rice / khichadi / dalia 20gm
  • Steamed vegetable (1 Katori) 100gm
  • Curd / Raita (1 Katori) 100gm
6. Late Evening
  • Tea with skimmed milk - 1 cup
  • Roasted cottage cheese 15gm
7. Dinner
  • Veg / Chicken soup 100 ml
  • Soft cut fruit 40 gm
  • Milk 100 ml

Stage 5: 4th Month Onwards

Diet: Normal Diet

  • If 50% of excess weight loss is reached, introduce additional complex carbohydrates such as bread, rice, potatoes, chapatis

Diet Plan: 1000 Calories, 70 gm Protein

1. Early Morning
  • Green tea / tea with skim milk 25 ml - 1 Cup
  • Almonds 5 in number (10 gm)
2. Breakfast
  • Skimmed milk 250 ml - (1 glass)
  • Bread - 1 slice or dalia / corn flakes - 20 gm (1.5 tbsp)
  • Paneer - egg white 40 gm (2 in nos.)
3. Mid-Morning
  • Seasonal fruits 100-200 gm
4. Lunch
  • Chapati - 1 small (20 gm whole wheat flour)
  • Dal - 15 gm or chicken / fish - 20gm (2 small pieces)
  • Seasonal vegetables 100gm (1 Katori)
  • Salad - (grated or cubes) 100gm with sprouts 15 gm
  • Raita / curd - 100gm (3/4 katori)
5. Evening
  • Milk - 200 ml (1 glass)
  • Roasted cheese or cutlet 25 gm
6. Dinner
  • Skimmed milk / custard 250 ml

Total fat allowance (1.5 tsp) / according to weight loss

Instructions for a Reducing Diet

Foods to be Avoided:

  • All fried foods like pooris, paranthas, cutlets, samosas, etc.
  • Saturated fats like butter, cream, desi ghee, vanaspati, margarine, etc.
  • Avoid full cream milk
  • Sugar & sweet products like glucose, honey, jams, jellies, chocolates, candies, marmalades, ice creams, etc.
  • Red meats & organ meats, egg yolk
  • Carbonated beverages, alcoholic drinks & canned fruit juices
  • Root vegetables like potato, sweet potato, yam, colocasia, jimikand, beetroot, etc.
  • Fruits like chikoo, mangoes, banana, and grapes, etc.
  • Pickles in oil
  • Avoid dry fruits except almonds and walnuts
  • Horlicks, Complan, Bournvita, etc.
  • Nibbling & snacking in between meals
