The well-renowned bariatric surgeon, Dr Tarun Mittal says nutritional support can be crucial to the success of bariatric surgery, even for patients who are not experiencing symptoms of deficiency. Patients are getting surgery to make them healthier, but if they do not follow the nutrition guidelines, they could not get the real benefit of surgery. After the surgery, your diet is defined in four parts. You must have followed the diet stages. It is truly recommended.

Liquid diet: just after your surgery you are recommended to liquid diet only. It digests easily and gives you energy. We recommend a liquid diet every hour. After surgery, your body is no ready to digest anything solid. So liquid is the initial diet after the surgery for 21 days.

Pureed or semi-liquid diet: Now it is time to start the semi-liquid food. These patients are allowed certain foods so long as they’re pureed in a blender. It’s recommended that patients prioritize water and protein consumption when choosing the foods they eat. Examples of foods you can eat during this stage include:

• Non-dairy yogurt

• Oatmeal or cream of wheat

• Apple puree

• Black beans, lentils, or fat-free refined beans (blended)

• Pea soup, cream of mushroom soup, etc.

• Cottage cheese

• Curd

• Any vegetable soup

Soft or light diet: This is going to start after 2 weeks of surgery. Now your digestive system is ready to digest soft foods. This stage will continue for about 7-10 days. Try to eat every 6 hours, being sure not to skip any meals.

• Lean proteins like slow-cooked chicken

• Egg whites

• fish

• Refried beans, mashed lentils, chickpeas, and tofu

• Soft, low-fat cheeses

• Over-cooked vegetables

• Soft fruits like melons, peaches, and avocados

Regular diet: After 3 weeks you can start your regular normal diet. But the restriction is here to avoid heavy, oily and junk food. Take a proper portion of protein and fluids.
